God has used Haiti to change us as a couple and as a family. From the beginning of our relationship we sought opportunities to serve others. We understood the joy that comes from blessing others. But we really had know idea what loving others looked like and felt like until we started serving the people of Haiti.
God put Haiti on my heart and it took me a year to finally book a week long trip in the summer of 2013. I came back broken and filled with a desire to continue to be a part of what God was doing in that country. I went back the following spring. Caleb joined me in the summer of 2014 and was able to understand all that was stirring in my soul. We are both educators, so becoming an advocate for Grace Academy seemed like a perfect way to use our talents and continue serving stateside. I was able to take many trips to provide professional development for teachers and staff. Opening Hope School in Cite Soleil was a dream come true. Both schools are full of promise and opportunity.
Now we’ve been called to go to Haiti. We had a lot of reasons to say no, but in the end we decided to put faith over fear. We were able to take a year long leave of absence from our jobs-mine as an elementary instructional coach and Caleb’s as a middle school dean. We are thrilled to partner with the staff at Grace Village and our two schools to focus on child development, student services, and community education. We have big dreams of building up this next generation to be the leaders, innovators, and disciples that change history.
Olivia (13) was able to go on her first trip to Haiti this year. She came back with all kinds of stories to tell her sister, Ellorie (10). They are both excited for this adventure. They know God is working and want to be a part of it. They will continue their schooling online. We pray daily that God will continue to teach us how to love. We know He hears our prayers. He has and will continue to use the people of Haiti to make us who he created us to be.
